Front Entrance and Driveway Renovation in Newmarket

Lyman Blvd

Project Overview

The Wilkinson Place project was a comprehensive front and rear landscape design–build completed on a corner property in Aurora. The scope focused on upgrading the driveway, front entry, planting, and lighting, while also addressing settlement issues and improving functionality in the backyard.Although the existing landscape was generally well established, the project required careful material selection, grade management, and integration between new and existing elements to achieve a cohesive and durable result.

Site Conditions and Constraints

Several site-specific factors influenced both the design and construction approach:

  • A corner lot with good access at the front of the property

  • A steeper grade at the driveway requiring careful transition between elevations

  • Tighter access to the backyard, requiring wheelbarrow-only material movement

  • An existing pool at the rear with areas of settlement that needed correction

These conditions were addressed early in the planning phase to ensure smooth execution during construction.

Design Approach

The design approach focused on three priorities:

Modernizing the front entrance

A new material palette was introduced using black porcelain paving and antique black stone elements to create a contemporary appearance.

Improving safety and comfort at the entry landing

The front steps and landing were redesigned to provide a stable, comfortable approach to the home.

Restoring structure to the planting and landscape layout

Overgrown planting was removed or reduced and replaced with structured plantings that frame the entry and walkway.

The goal was to create a front entrance that feels welcoming, organized, and clearly defined when approaching the home.

Materials and Detailing

Driveway Repair

The existing driveway required repair to restore its structure and integrate properly with the new front walkway and entry sequence.

Porcelain Walkways

Modern black porcelain paving was installed to form the front walkway and entrance surfaces. Multiple sizes were used to create a balanced layout:

  • 24 × 24

  • 24 × 36

  • 12 × 24

These sizes helped create a clean, modern paving pattern that complements the home’s architecture.

Porch Cladding Replacement

The original porch had natural stone cladding that had begun to fail and detach. The old cladding was removed and replaced with new stone cladding installed over the existing concrete porch structure, restoring both durability and appearance.

Armour Stone Steps and Front Wall

Large armour stone blocks were used to construct the front steps and structural elements at the entry. One exceptionally large stone piece forms the primary face of the front step wall, creating a bold natural feature at the entrance.

Antique Black Coping

Antique black natural stone coping was used to complement the porcelain paving and unify the hardscape palette.

Planting Design

Planting was simplified and refreshed to frame the entry while reducing maintenance.

Key plant elements included:

  • Japanese Maple as a feature tree

  • Vinca groundcover for low-maintenance planting areas

Overgrown boxwood and hydrangeas were addressed to restore balance and scale near the house.

Landscape Lighting

Low-voltage landscape lighting was installed to improve both safety and evening appearance.

Lighting included:

  • Path lights along the walkway

  • Uplighting to highlight planting and architectural elements

Irrigation

An irrigation system was installed for the planting beds to help maintain the new gardens.

Final Outcome

The finished landscape delivers a modern, welcoming front entrance that improves both safety and curb appeal.

Porcelain paving, armour stone steps, and antique black stone details create a clean and durable entry sequence.

Structured planting, lighting, and irrigation help ensure the landscape remains attractive and easy to maintain.

The result is a front yard that feels refined, organized, and clearly defined, while respecting the scale of the home and the existing mature tree on the property.

FAQ

Why replace natural stone cladding on a porch?

Over time, stone cladding can fail due to moisture, freeze-thaw cycles, or aging mortar. Replacing it restores structural integrity and improves the appearance of the entrance.

Why use porcelain for walkways and entrances?

Porcelain paving provides a modern aesthetic and clean lines, making it popular for contemporary front landscapes.

What is armour stone used for in landscape construction?

Armour stone is commonly used for steps, retaining elements, and structural features because of its strength and natural appearance.
