Our Landscape Design-Build Process

A Clear, Professional Path from First Idea to Finished Landscape

At Horvath Landscapes, we follow a structured design-build landscape process that allows homeowners to move from initial ideas to a completed outdoor space with clarity and confidence.

Design-build means that the same experienced team handles both the design and the construction, ensuring the project is planned properly and built exactly as intended.

This integrated approach allows us to create outdoor spaces that are not only beautiful, but also structurally sound, practical, and built to perform well in the freeze-thaw climate of Ontario.

Our process has been refined through decades of landscape construction experience in Aurora, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, King Township, North York, and across the Greater Toronto Area.

Step 1 — Initial Conversation

Every project begins with a conversation.

We take time to understand:

  • how you want to use your outdoor space

  • the type of project you are considering (patio, pool, front entrance, full backyard, etc.)

  • your style preferences

  • your timeline and investment range

This first step allows us to determine if we are the right fit for your project and helps guide the next steps.

Many of our projects begin with homeowners who simply know they want a better outdoor space but are unsure exactly how it should come together. Our job is to help shape those ideas into a clear plan.

Step 2 — Site Consultation & Property Evaluation

If the project appears to be a good fit, we schedule a site consultation.

During this visit we carefully evaluate the property and begin developing ideas for the space.

This includes:

  • reviewing the layout of the property

  • discussing how the space could be used

  • evaluating drainage and grading conditions

  • measuring key dimensions

  • photographing and documenting the existing site

This step helps us understand both the opportunities and constraints of the property so the design can work naturally with the space.

Step 3 — Professional Landscape Design

For most projects, we move forward with a custom landscape design phase.

This stage allows us to properly plan the space before construction begins.

Depending on the project, the design may include:

  • patios and outdoor living areas

  • interlock driveways and front entrances

  • pools and surrounding landscapes

  • retaining walls and steps

  • planting plans and garden beds

  • landscape lighting

  • outdoor kitchens and fire features

We use professional landscape design software and detailed site information to ensure the design can be built accurately and efficiently.

A well-planned design allows the construction phase to run smoothly and helps prevent costly changes later in the project.

Step 4 — Concept Design Presentation

Once the initial design is developed, we meet with you to review the concept together.

During this presentation we walk through:

  • the overall layout of the space

  • how the different areas connect and flow together

  • the key design features

  • possible materials and finishes

This meeting is collaborative and allows us to refine the design based on your feedback.

Often only small adjustments are needed once the overall concept is in place.

Step 5 — Refined Design & Project Proposal

After incorporating your feedback, we prepare the refined design along with a detailed project proposal.

This proposal outlines:

  • the scope of work

  • construction details

  • materials involved

  • project investment

Because the design and construction planning are developed together, the proposal reflects a realistic path forward for building the project properly.

Our goal is always to provide a clear and transparent understanding of the work involved.

Step 6 — Material Selection

Choosing the right materials is one of the most exciting parts of the process.

We guide you through the selection of materials such as:

  • pavers and natural stone

  • retaining wall systems

  • pool finishes and coping

  • outdoor lighting

  • trees, shrubs, and planting combinations

By confirming materials early, we ensure the finished landscape reflects the design vision and avoids surprises during construction.

Step 7 — Project Preparation

Before construction begins, we carefully prepare the project so the installation runs efficiently.

Preparation may include:

  • confirming site measurements

  • coordinating materials and deliveries

  • organizing plants and specialty items

  • laying out the design on the property so construction begins accurately

These steps are critical for keeping projects organized and ensuring everything is built as planned.

Step 8 — Professional Landscape Construction

With the planning complete, our experienced team begins the construction phase.

Our crews focus on:

  • proper excavation and base preparation

  • structural integrity and drainage

  • precise installation of hardscape materials

  • careful placement of planting and lighting

Throughout construction we maintain frequent check-ins and communication to ensure everything is progressing smoothly and that the project continues to meet expectations.

Because our team handled both the design and the construction planning, the installation process remains aligned with the original vision.

A Design-Build Approach That Works

The design-build model allows us to manage every stage of the project with one coordinated team.

For homeowners, this provides:

  • clearer communication

  • better planning

  • fewer surprises during construction

  • a more organized project experience

Most importantly, it allows us to create landscapes that look exceptional while also being built correctly from the ground up.
