Custom Outdoor Kitchen & Pizza Oven
Aurora Landscape Project Spotlight

This custom outdoor kitchen and wood-fired pizza oven was built as part of a backyard landscape renovation in Aurora, Ontario.

The goal was to create a permanent outdoor cooking space that blended traditional masonry craftsmanship with durable natural stone materials suited to Ontario’s climate. The finished kitchen was designed to feel substantial, timeless, and fully integrated with the surrounding stone patio.

This project was constructed using a reinforced concrete base, concrete block masonry, oversized Owen Sound limestone slabs, natural stone veneer, a high-end Italian refractory cement pizza oven kit, and a grey India flagstone patio. A slide-in stainless steel barbecue was also incorporated into the layout to create a fully functional outdoor cooking area.
Although this project was built approximately 10 years ago, it still demonstrates the long-term durability and visual appeal of properly built masonry outdoor kitchens.

Outdoor Kitchen Construction Process
This project began with a reinforced concrete base designed to support the significant weight of the masonry kitchen, large limestone slabs, and refractory pizza oven system. When an outdoor kitchen is built from real stone and masonry rather than lightweight prefabricated materials, a solid structural base is essential for long-term performance.
Once the foundation was prepared, the kitchen structure itself was built using concrete masonry block. This created the load-bearing framework for the countertops, pizza oven base, barbecue opening, and open storage areas below the counters.

One of the defining features of this project is the use of large Owen Sound limestone slabs. These oversized slabs were used to form the countertop surfaces and the main platform supporting the pizza oven. In addition to their durability, the limestone gives the kitchen a substantial and timeless natural stone appearance that fits beautifully within a high-end backyard landscape.

At the center of the kitchen, Horvath Landscapes installed a high-performance Italian refractory cement pizza oven kit. The oven system was then completed on site with insulation layers, interior firebrick, and finishing work to create a true wood-fired cooking environment. Proper insulation is one of the most important aspects of this kind of oven because it allows the dome to retain heat efficiently and perform the way a traditional pizza oven should.
A stainless steel chimney system was installed above the oven flue and later integrated into the finished stonework. The exterior of the kitchen was clad with natural stone veneer, including a hand-built stone arch detail around the oven opening. These details helped give the finished oven the look of a traditional masonry structure rather than a prefabricated insert.

The outdoor kitchen was built within a grey India flagstone patio, which complements the natural stone of the kitchen and helps tie the entire outdoor space together. The final result is a durable backyard cooking and entertaining feature designed to last for many years.

Frequently Asked Questions About Outdoor Kitchens
How much does an outdoor kitchen cost in Aurora?

Outdoor kitchens in Aurora can vary significantly depending on size, materials, and appliances. Smaller kitchens may start in the mid-range, while custom masonry kitchens with pizza ovens, natural stone, and premium finishes can represent a much larger investment.

Are wood-fired pizza ovens worth it?

Yes. A properly built wood-fired pizza oven creates a cooking experience that cannot be replicated by a standard barbecue. When insulated correctly, it retains heat extremely well and can be used for pizza, bread, roasting, and other high-temperature cooking.

What is the best countertop material for an outdoor kitchen?

Natural stone is one of the best choices for a premium outdoor kitchen. In this project, Owen Sound limestone slab was used to create a durable and timeless countertop surface.

Do masonry outdoor kitchens need a concrete base?

Yes. A reinforced concrete base is essential for masonry outdoor kitchens because of the weight of the block structure, natural stone, countertops, and appliances.

How long does it take to build a custom outdoor kitchen?

The timeline depends on the complexity of the project, weather, materials, and surrounding patio work. A custom masonry outdoor kitchen typically takes longer than a prefabricated installation, but it offers a more durable and integrated result.
