Front Yard, Driveway, and Patio Landscape Renovation in Newmarket
Carm Shier Crt, Newmarket
Project Overview
The property was a new construction home that required a complete landscape installation. The homeowners wanted a finished outdoor environment that included a functional driveway, a welcoming front entrance, planting throughout the property, and a small backyard patio.
The design focused on creating visual distinction between different landscape elements while keeping the overall look cohesive and elegant.
A combination of modern interlock paving, natural stone textures, structured planting, and lighting created a landscape that feels polished and well integrated with the home.

Site Conditions and Constraints
Because the home was newly built, the site began as largely unfinished soil around the house.
The landscape installation included:
-
Construction of a new interlock driveway
-
A front walkway and entry steps
-
A rear patio area
-
Planting throughout the property
-
A shared walkway between properties
The work was completed during the hottest period of the summer, which required careful planning to ensure that newly installed plants remained healthy.
This project also played a role in shaping the company’s approach to irrigation. At the time, many irrigation contractors were unavailable due to heavy demand during the COVID period, which led Horvath Landscapes to begin installing irrigation systems in-house.

Design Approach
The design focused on balancing durability, aesthetics, and practicality.
Key design decisions included:
-
Using different paving materials to clearly distinguish the driveway from pedestrian walkways
-
Installing a shared walkway between properties, reducing unnecessary duplication of pathways
-
Incorporating retaining walls and pillars to create architectural structure
-
Layering planting throughout the property to soften the stone features
The goal was to create a landscape that felt intentional and well organized while maintaining long-term durability.
Materials, Features, and Execution
Driveway Installation
The driveway was constructed using Bestway Stone Trevista pavers in Glacier Creek, an 80 mm interlock product suitable for residential driveways.
This material provides durability while maintaining a clean and contemporary appearance.
Walkways and Steps
To create visual contrast with the driveway, the walkways and steps were constructed using Technobloc Flagstone pavers in Slate Grey.
Using a different paving style for pedestrian areas helps clearly define circulation paths throughout the landscape.
Retaining Walls and Pillars
The retaining walls and structural elements were built using Technobloc Brandon Wall, providing strong structural support while maintaining a natural stone appearance.
Pillar caps and coping elements were finished in Slate Grey, matching the walkway and steps.
Backyard Patio
A small backyard patio was constructed to provide a comfortable outdoor seating area connected to the home.
Shared Side Walkway
Instead of building separate walkways on both properties, a single shared walkway was installed between the homes. This approach improved efficiency and created a cleaner landscape layout.
Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting was installed throughout the property, including lighting integrated beneath the coping, which creates a striking visual effect in the evening.
Irrigation
Because the project was installed during extremely hot summer conditions, irrigation was installed to support the planting and ensure the long-term health of the gardens.
Planting Design
The planting palette focused on combining structure, seasonal interest, and texture throughout the property.
Key planting elements included:
-
Columnar oak trees for vertical structure
-
Japanese maple as a focal tree
-
Hydrangeas for seasonal colour
-
Spirea and Weigela shrubs for layered planting
-
Maiden grass and other ornamental grasses for movement and texture
-
Griselinia shrubs for evergreen structure
These plantings help soften the stone elements while providing year-round interest.
Final Outcome
The completed landscape provides a well organized outdoor environment that complements the new home.
The combination of Trevista driveway paving, slate grey walkways, Brandon wall structures, and layered planting creates a landscape that feels refined and cohesive. Lighting and irrigation ensure the landscape continues to perform well and maintain its appearance over time.
The project demonstrates how thoughtful design and quality materials can elevate the appearance of a newly built property.
