Backyard Design–Build Project in Nobleton, King Township
Nobleton-King
Project Overview
The Nobleton project was a full backyard design–build completed on a large residential property in King Township. Early in the planning process, the clients considered both a swimming pool and a sport court. Ultimately, the decision was made to prioritize a large, high-quality sport court to support year-round family use.
The project focused on creating an organized outdoor space that balanced recreation, accessibility, and long-term durability while preserving flexibility for potential future changes.

Site Conditions and Constraints
The backyard required significant grade management to create usable, level areas. Without proper regrading and retaining, the lower portion of the yard would not have supported the type of recreational space the clients wanted.
Key site considerations included:
-
Managing elevation changes between the house, hot tub, and lower yard
-
Creating a single, level plane at the base of the stairs for the main yard
-
Coordinating access using both the subject property and a neighbouring property
-
Ensuring all disturbed areas were restored to a condition better than before construction
Access was sufficient to allow extensive use of machinery, which helped reduce handwork and improve construction efficiency.

Design Approach
The design centred on the sport court as the primary feature of the backyard. Rather than treating it as an isolated element, the surrounding landscape was organized to support circulation, viewing, and ease of use.
Key design decisions included:
-
Elevating access to the hot tub so it could be entered without additional stair transitions
-
Using a sequence of steps from the house to hot tub height, then to a terrace level
-
Retaining the lower yard so the sport court and surrounding lawn sit on a single, functional plane
-
Positioning the sport court to allow potential flexibility for future backyard changes
This approach ensured the backyard worked cohesively rather than as a collection of separate zones.
Sport Court Construction
The sport court was built to accommodate multiple uses, including:
-
Basketball
-
Pickleball
-
Seasonal conversion to a small hockey rink
Construction focused on durability, performance, and long-term usability. The court was installed with careful base preparation and attention to drainage to support year-round use.
The scale and placement of the court reflect the clients’ priorities, particularly for their son’s hockey training and family recreation.
Materials and Hardscape
Light-coloured concrete pavers were used throughout the project to create a clean, bright aesthetic across the hardscape areas. While lighter concrete requires more regular cleaning than porcelain, it delivers strong visual impact and complements the open character of the property.
Stonework and steps were integrated with precision to ensure safe, comfortable movement between levels. An armour stone retaining wall was constructed to manage grade changes and stabilize the lower yard.
Planting and Lighting
Planting was designed to support structure and visual balance without introducing unnecessary maintenance. The planting scheme focused on durability, clarity, and long-term performance.
Landscape lighting was installed to support evening use of the yard and provide safe navigation between the house, hot tub, sport court, and lawn areas.
Construction and Execution
The project was executed using machinery wherever possible to reduce manual labour and maintain efficiency across the large site. Neighbour coordination was handled carefully, with access restored and improved once work was complete.
Attention to sequencing and organization ensured the project progressed smoothly despite its size and complexity.
Final Outcome
Functionally, the backyard now supports active, everyday use, with the sport court serving as the primary recreational feature. Circulation between the house, hot tub, and yard is clear and comfortable, with no unnecessary transitions.
Visually, the completed space feels open, balanced, and purposeful—designed around how the family actually uses the property rather than around decorative features alone.
