Backyard Landscape and Outdoor Living Space in Newmarket
Goring Circle. Newmarket
Project Overview
The property was a relatively new home where the backyard had never been properly developed. The space consisted mainly of grass with a few basic builder-installed slabs and steps.
The homeowners wanted a backyard that would feel complete and inviting, with dedicated areas for entertaining, cooking, and relaxing. Because the property borders a pedestrian walkway, privacy was also an important design consideration.
The final design transformed the yard into a cohesive outdoor living space anchored by a large natural stone patio, a custom pergola structure, and a built-in fire feature.

Site Conditions and Constraints
Although the property was relatively new, the backyard had several design considerations.
The yard was fairly compact, requiring efficient use of space to accommodate multiple outdoor living features. In addition, a public walkway runs beside the property, allowing pedestrians to easily see into the backyard.
Creating privacy from this walkway while maintaining an open and welcoming environment was an important design challenge.
Access to the backyard was also somewhat limited, so the construction work was completed using smaller equipment to minimize disruption to the property.
Design Approach
The design aimed to create a comfortable outdoor space with a contemporary feel that complements the home’s warm exterior colours.
Rather than using overly modern materials or sharp architectural lines, the landscape incorporated natural textures and warm stone tones. The layout focused on creating defined outdoor living zones:
-
A large patio for seating and entertaining
-
A pergola providing shade and structure
-
A fire feature for evening gathering
-
An outdoor kitchen with bar seating
-
Planting to soften the hardscape and provide privacy
Because the yard is visible from the neighbouring walkway, a decorative cedar screen was integrated into the pergola design to help create privacy while maintaining an attractive appearance.
Materials, Features, and Execution
Patio and Hardscape
The patio was constructed using India sandstone flagstone in brown tones, chosen for its warm natural colour and ability to complement the architecture of the home.
Matching India sandstone steps were used to connect the patio and surrounding areas.
Custom Cedar Pergola
A large custom cedar pergola was built using oversized structural timbers. Rather than incorporating traditional decorative cuts, the pergola was designed with large monolithic wood members, giving it a strong contemporary appearance.
The pergola provides shade while acting as a central architectural feature in the backyard.
Privacy Screen
A decorative cedar privacy screen was integrated into the pergola structure to provide visual separation from the adjacent walkway.
The screen was built using cedar slats of varying widths, creating a custom architectural element that offers both privacy and visual interest.
Outdoor Kitchen and Bar
The outdoor living space includes a built-in outdoor kitchen with bar seating, allowing the homeowners to cook and entertain comfortably in the backyard.
Fire Feature
A built-in natural gas fire feature was installed and connected to the home’s existing gas line. The fire feature provides warmth and creates a focal point for evening gatherings.
The fire feature was finished with a stone veneer surround, complementing the natural stone patio.
Landscape Lighting
Landscape lighting was installed to highlight key architectural features, including the pergola, planting beds, and patio areas, creating an inviting atmosphere after dark.
Planting Design
Planting was installed around the patio and structures to soften the hardscape and introduce seasonal texture.
The planting palette includes:
-
Hydrangeas for seasonal colour
-
Ornamental grasses for movement and texture
-
Additional shrubs and small trees to frame the outdoor living spaces
The planting design helps create a comfortable and private environment within the relatively small backyard.
Final Outcome
The finished landscape transformed a simple builder backyard into a welcoming outdoor living space that feels both functional and visually refined.
The natural stone patio, custom cedar pergola, and fire feature create strong focal points, while the outdoor kitchen and bar provide a comfortable space for entertaining. The cedar privacy screen helps shield the yard from the nearby walkway, allowing the homeowners to enjoy their backyard with greater privacy.
Together, these elements create a backyard that feels warm, contemporary, and thoughtfully designed.
