Front and Side Yard Landscape Renovation in Aurora

Corner Lot. Aurora

Project Overview

The homeowners wanted to update an aging front yard landscape that no longer reflected the quality of the home. The previous walkway and concrete porch had been in place for many years and lacked the visual presence needed for such a visible property.

The goal of the renovation was to modernize the entrance while creating a landscape that felt classy, welcoming, and well cared for without being overly elaborate. By introducing durable materials and structured planting, the new landscape dramatically improved curb appeal and created a stronger connection between the driveway, walkway, and front entrance.

Site Conditions and Constraints

This project required careful planning due to the presence of several mature trees and the layout of the corner lot.

The site included a large birch tree and a mature evergreen that the homeowners wanted to preserve. To protect these trees, construction access had to be managed carefully using smaller equipment.

The existing landscape featured:

  • An aging walkway leading from the driveway toward the corner before turning toward the house

  • A concrete porch that no longer matched the home’s aesthetic

  • Existing groundcover junipers that were retained

  • Overgrown planting that needed to be refreshed

While drainage was not a problem on this property, the project included installing irrigation for the planting beds to support the new gardens.

Design Approach

Because the property is located on a corner, the most important viewpoint was from the sidewalk. The design focused on creating a front entrance that would attract the eye naturally and guide visitors toward the front door.

The approach included:

  • Introducing modern dark materials to complement the home’s grey brick and dark doors

  • Creating a stronger and safer entry sequence using natural stone steps

  • Preserving existing mature trees while refreshing the surrounding planting

  • Adding structured foundation planting to frame the home

This approach ensured the landscape looked polished and balanced from every viewing angle.

Materials, Features, and Execution

Hardscape Materials

The new front walkway and entrance surfaces were constructed using black porcelain pavers, chosen for their durability, modern appearance, and resistance to fading or wear.

Natural stone elements were incorporated to provide contrast and texture within the landscape.

Structural Elements

The front entrance was rebuilt using natural stone steps and coping, creating a durable and elegant transition to the front door.

A large stone sill was installed at the doorway, providing a comfortable landing area where homeowners can safely stand while opening the door or carrying groceries inside.

Several armour stone pieces were used to add structure and visual weight to the landscape design.

Lighting

Low-voltage landscape lighting was installed throughout the planting beds and along the walkway. At night, the lighting highlights the planting and architectural elements of the entrance.

Irrigation

An irrigation system was installed to support the planting beds and ensure the new landscape remains healthy and well maintained.

Planting Design

The planting design focused on creating layered structure while working with the shaded conditions created by the existing trees.

Key planting elements included:

  • Japanese forest grass (gold variety) for shaded areas

  • Groundcover junipers retained from the original landscape

  • Hydrangeas for seasonal interest

  • Skyrocket junipers for vertical structure

  • Ornamental grasses for texture and movement

  • Yews and boxwood used in a layered foundation planting design

One distinctive planting detail occurs along the garage wall. A line of boxwood travels up the wall and then extends outward, creating a strong visual structure. Behind the jog in the planting line, yews provide depth and contrast, continuing toward the house.

Final Outcome

  • The finished landscape dramatically improves the home’s curb appeal and presence on its corner lot.

  • From the sidewalk, the new walkway, structured planting, and natural stone entry create a strong focal point that draws attention toward the house. The homeowners frequently receive compliments on the landscape from neighbors and passersby.

  • The combination of porcelain paving, natural stone steps, armour stone features, and layered planting creates a landscape that feels modern, refined, and carefully maintained.
