Front Entrance and Driveway Renovation in Aurora
Kemano Road. Aurora
Project Overview
The homeowners wanted to replace an aging front landscape that had been built approximately 30 years earlier. The original steps and driveway walls reflected older design styles and the interlock driveway had reached the end of its lifespan.
Because the front door sits roughly four feet higher than the garage, the entrance required a long staircase that was both visually important and structurally complex. The goal was to rebuild the entrance using large natural stone and armour stone elements, creating a front landscape that feels timeless, durable, and well integrated with the property.
The project also included installing a new interlock driveway, refreshing planting areas, and adding irrigation and lighting systems.

Site Conditions and Constraints
Several site conditions influenced the design and construction of this project.
The property is located on a corner lot, making the front landscape highly visible from multiple directions. The front door is positioned approximately four feet above the garage level, requiring a long run of steps to reach the entrance.
The previous landscape included:
-
Old interlock driveway pavers
-
Outdated retaining walls along the driveway
-
A staircase leading to the entrance that required rebuilding
-
Mature trees that needed to be protected during construction
Preserving the existing trees was a priority, which meant excavation and construction had to be carefully planned to avoid disturbing root systems.

Design Approach
The design focused on creating a strong architectural entrance using large natural materials while maintaining a clean and organized layout.
Key design objectives included:
-
Replacing outdated materials with natural stone and armour stone
-
Creating a staircase that feels substantial and welcoming
-
Rebuilding the driveway using durable modern pavers
-
Introducing layered planting around the existing trees
-
Protecting the mature trees while performing heavy construction
The final design combines structural stone elements with soft planting and lighting to create a balanced and elegant front landscape.
Materials, Features, and Execution
Hardscape Materials
The driveway was rebuilt using Bestway Stone Trevista Smooth pavers in Glacier Creek, providing a durable and modern interlock surface.
Large natural stone and armour stone elements were used throughout the entry sequence to create structure and long-term durability.
Structural Stone Elements
The staircase and surrounding retaining areas were constructed using Flamborough armour stone, a natural limestone quarried in Flamborough, Ontario.
Armour stone was used to:
-
Retain soil along the staircase
-
Stabilize the sides of the steps
-
Prevent erosion along the grade change
The main steps were constructed using large Indian sandstone slabs, including several pieces approximately eight feet long along with additional six-foot and five-foot stones.
These large stones create a dramatic and durable entrance while reducing the number of joints within the steps.
Construction Methods
Construction was primarily performed using a medium-sized excavator, which allowed the crew to move large stone elements efficiently while minimizing disturbance to the surrounding tree root systems.
Large stones were installed using stone clamps and mechanical lifting equipment, allowing precise placement while maintaining site safety.
Because the excavator could reach long distances, the team avoided driving machines directly over sensitive root zones.
Lighting
Low-voltage landscape lighting was installed to highlight the steps, planting areas, and key architectural elements of the entrance.
Irrigation
A full irrigation system was installed to support both the lawn and planting beds. Lighting and irrigation systems were installed by the Horvath Landscapes team.
Final Outcome
-
The completed landscape dramatically improves the approach to the home.
-
Large natural stone steps and armour stone retaining elements create a strong architectural entrance, while the new interlock driveway provides a clean and durable surface. The planting design softens the stone features and adds seasonal interest.
-
Together, the materials and layout create a front landscape that feels substantial, elegant, and built to last, while protecting the mature trees that define the character of the property.
Final Outcome
Functionally, the project improved driveway performance, corrected settlement issues near the pool, and added usable outdoor space at the rear of the property. Circulation and transitions between grades were resolved cleanly.
Visually, the completed landscape presents a cohesive and balanced front elevation, with materials and planting working together to support the architecture of the home. The result is a refined, low-maintenance outdoor environment built to perform over time.
