The Unique Challenge of a Corner Property
This project is located on a corner property in Aurora. Three sides face the street, while the main entrance is oriented toward an intersection. Initially, the front yard was a large expanse of lawn. A single asphalt walkway connected the driveway to the front door. There was no stepping stone path or side access to the backyard. As a result, daily circulation often meant walking directly across the grass. This was functional, but it lacked clarity and design intent.

Redefining Circulation and Space
Our first step was to reorganize the circulation. We measured the elevation difference between the front porch and the driveway. This helped us determine the number of steps required. At each walkway corner, we introduced small walkout areas. These were framed by low retaining walls and hedges, creating cleaner lines and a sense of structure.
From the porch to the backyard side gate, we preserved the openness of the lawn. We added a series of 2x3 white porcelain stepping stones, offering a natural and understated path across the grass. This design not only enhances functionality but also adds aesthetic appeal.

Choosing the Right Materials for Modern Style
Since the house is a recently built modern residence, we recommended materials that align with its architectural style. The client chose white porcelain for both the walkway and retaining walls. This choice resulted in a front yard that feels clean and contemporary.
Beyond its appearance, porcelain offers several advantages. It’s easy to clean, highly durable, and simple to replace if a piece ever breaks. This makes it more practical than many traditional interlock materials.

Planting Layers and Composition
The planting scheme was designed around the contrast between horizontal structure and vertical focal points. We used Inkberry Holly and Hicks Yew as hedges. These establish a strong horizontal framework that ties together the walkway and the house.
To break up these lines, we introduced focal plants such as Japanese Maple, Skyrocket Juniper, and Hydrangea Tree. These add vertical accents to the landscape. Interestingly, the Hydrangea—at around five feet tall—stands out even more because of the abundance of horizontal elements in the background. Together, these plantings balance the clean modern hardscape with natural layering and visual rhythm.

The Importance of Outdoor Spaces
Creating a beautiful landscape is more than just aesthetics. Outdoor spaces serve as extensions of our homes. They provide areas for relaxation, entertainment, and connection with nature. A well-designed landscape can enhance our quality of life. It invites us to spend more time outdoors, enjoying the fresh air and sunshine.
When we think about our outdoor spaces, we should consider how they make us feel. A thoughtfully designed landscape can evoke a sense of peace and tranquility. It can also inspire creativity and foster social connections.
Conclusion: A Lasting Transformation
In conclusion, transforming a corner lot into a stunning landscape requires careful planning and execution. By redefining circulation, choosing the right materials, and creating a balanced planting scheme, we can create outdoor spaces that are both functional and beautiful.
