In landscape design, few shrubs are as beloved as the Incrediball Hydrangea. Known for its adaptability, strong structure, and long-lasting beauty, it has become a staple in gardens across Toronto and the surrounding regions.

Unlike most hydrangea varieties, Incrediball thrives in a wide range of light conditions—from full sun to partial shade. Its large, globe-shaped white blooms shift subtly in tone with changing sunlight and temperature. Whether used as a focal point, in mass plantings, or as foundation shrubs, it brings brightness, balance, and fullness to any garden.

Characteristics, Light & Growing Conditions

Scientifically known as Hydrangea arborescens ‘Abetwo’, this improved form of the classic Annabelle Hydrangea features stronger stems that keep its large, globe-shaped blooms upright even after heavy rain.

Huge Globe-Shaped Bloom

Growing about 4–5 feet tall and wide, Incrediball forms a dense, rounded shrub with flower heads up to 12 inches across, creating a bold presence in the garden. The blooms open green in spring, turn white in summer, and fade to soft tan in fall, often remaining intact through winter for added texture and seasonal interest.

Native to the eastern United States, this smooth hydrangea thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates clay, loam, or sandy soils. The key to success is good drainage—avoid soggy or compacted soil to maintain healthy growth.

Planting & Maintenance Tips

Before planting an Incrediball Hydrangea, check that the planting bed is moist but well-drained. After planting, apply a 2–3 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain moisture, stabilize soil temperature, and protect roots during cold winters. These practices are especially suited for gardens across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and similar climates.

The best planting time is autumn, when fallen leaves naturally enrich the soil and provide nutrients for establishment before winter. For pruning, trim in early spring before new growth begins—removing old stems encourages strong new shoots and promotes larger blooms through the season.

Designing with Incrediball Hydrangea in the GTA

Incrediball Hydrangea is one of the most flexible shrubs in GTA landscapes. With its balanced size and upright form, it fits perfectly in formal gardens, modern yards, or natural-style settings.

The most common use is as a flowering hedge. When planted in a row, the white blooms form a soft yet structured line that brightens the garden through summer. It pairs beautifully with Boxwood (Buxus spp.) — the low hedge in front visually supports the hydrangea blooms, creating a calm, refined formal garden look. For added height and rhythm, designers often mix in Emerald Cedar (Thuja occidentalis ‘Smaragd’) — one cedar for every three hydrangeas provides vertical contrast and evergreen texture.

Color balance is also key. Incrediball’s white flowers stand out best against warm-toned materials such as wooden screens, fences, red twig dogwoods, or creeping phlox as groundcover.

By the poolside, a row of hydrangeas adds softness and freshness around hardscape edges. A semi-enclosed layout — for example, wrapping two or three sides of a patio — creates privacy without blocking light, making the space feel relaxed yet open.

Other design ideas include:

  • Borders: Use as a statement shrub along paths or edges.

  • Mixed Plantings: Combine with ferns, grasses, and shade perennials for texture contrast.

  • Containers: Grow in large pots for patios or entryways.

  • Cut Flowers: Perfect for both fresh and dried floral arrangements.

Availability and Planting Advice in the GTA

For homeowners in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), Incrediball Hydrangea is one of the easiest hydrangeas to find. Nearly every local nursery carries it, and its price is budget-friendly year-round.

If you’re planting hydrangeas for the first time, Horvath Landscapes recommends starting with a 3-gallon or 5-gallon size. These sizes establish quickly, develop strong roots, and typically bloom beautifully the following spring and summer. With proper soil preparation and consistent care, Incrediball Hydrangea will reward
